Hukarere takes the holistic approach to education, with emphasis on developing ACADEMIC, SOCIAL, CULTURAL, TECHNICAL, SPORTING, ARTISTIC and RELIGIOUS knowledge skills, understanding and attitudes.

The school founded in 1876 for the education of young Māori women in Aotearoa (New Zealand). The special character denotes it as, an Anglican school, established, but not exclusively, for the education of Māori girls in which language, culture and traditions are promoted.

The school welcomes girls of all cultures who would like to benefit from a commitment to excellence in education through Christian principles and an emphasis on Māori Tikanga and language.

ÒThe dream is that the school will operate according to Māori principles of education and will be committed to excellence in all areas. That it will emphasis Māori tikanga and language, Aotearoa history and Māori performing and visual arts as well as mainstream curriculum subjects. Last but not least, that the school will poster spiritual education and development of its students through a commitment to Christian principles and through the incorporation of Māori values and tikanga.Ó

The school has built up a positive profile in the community. The student roll has more than doubledÉ Students are motivated and purposeful in their learning, proud of their own achievements and of their schoolÉ Māori principles of education and educational practices are embodied in the whanau style of learning, education in te reo Māori, and the emphasis on tikanga Māori... The special character of Hukarere continues to permeate all aspects of school lifeÉIt symbolises the strong commitment to spiritual education, to tikanga Māori and to Christian principles.
